It’s pitch black. I’m driving at night. But I’m not driving, I’m the passenger. I don’t know where we’re going, and I have no control. I’m just along for the ride. The only information I have is the illuminated 5 feet of pavement in front of me. I’m getting 5 feet of information at a time. Everything else? All the blackness out there? I can’t see ten feet in front of me, but I’ll get there eventually. Everything I can’t see, all that nothingness of the night, is all the information I don’t have.
This is what living in a foreign language feels like.
